Watering is always necessary during periods of prolonged drought in summer as no plants can survive for too long in completely dry soil. There are however, sun loving plants which thrive in sandy soil and do not require watering in the bed or border except under prolonged dry conditions. However, keep in mind that the plants must be watered until they become established in the beds. These plants include:

  • Alyssum
  • Arctotis
  • Caladrinia
  • Caledula
  • Celosia
  • Cineraria
  • Cordyline
  • Coreposis
  • Cosmos
  • Dimporphotheca
  • Eschscholzia
  • Gazania
  • Helichrysum
  • Kochia
  • Mesembryanthemum
  • Nasturtium
  • Petunia
  • Phlox
  • Portulaca
  • Salvia
  • Tagetes
  • Ursinia
  • Vinca
  • Zinnia

The average bedding plant thrives where the site has some protection from the prevailing wind but receives little or no shade during the day .The soil should be free draining, reasonably rich in humus but not too rich in nitrogen. Unfortunately we can often do little or nothing to change the situation and it is wise to select plants that are known to succeed under the conditions that will prevail.
