Best Plants for A Hot Sunny Site

In my experience, the best plant for a hot sunny spot is a fibrous begonia or dipledenia. The following list contains many other varieties of plants that will also thrive in this hot location. The list contains a mix of annuals and perennials.

For long periods of daytime temperatures in the 80- 90 F (26-32 C) range, causes some bedding plants to stop flowering even though they have been adequately watered. Some plants that have withstood the heat of the summer include:

  • Amaranthus

  • Bedding Begonia

  • Celosia

  • Convolvulus

  • Coreopsis

  • Dahlia

  • Dipledenia

  • Euphorbia

  • Grasses

  • Helianthus

  • Kochia

  • Mandevilla

  • Pelargonium

  • Petunia

  • Portulaca

  • Rudbeckia

  • Saliva

  • Tagetes

  • Verbena

  • Zinnia

Most bedding plants thrive where the site has some protection from the prevailing wind but receives little or no shade during the day. The soil should be free draining, reasonably rich in humus but not too rich in nitrogen. Unfortunately, we cannot change the situation so choose plants that can handle the situation you put them in.
