Best Plants For A Windy Site

In an exposed windy site, you will want to choose plants that are not tall.  Low-growing and compact plants such as bedding begonias, impatiens, and pansies do better than tall ones such as Cosmos or Gallardia.

Plants that are known to do well in exposed sites also include:

  • Alyssum

  • Antirrhinum

  • Balsam

  • Bedding Begonia

  • Calendula

  • Cineraria

  • Coleus

  • Dahlia

  • Dianthus

  • Felicia

  • Hedera

  • Iberis

  • Impatiens

  • Lobelia

  • Marigold

  • Matricaria

  • Dwarf Nasturtium

  • Nemesia

  • Pansy

  • Pelargonium

  • Petunia

  • Phlox

  • Stock

  • Sweet William

  • Tagets

  • Verbena

  • Viola

  • Zinnia

Most bedding plants thrive where the site has some protection from the prevailing wind and received a little shade during the day. The soil should be free draining, reasonably rich in humus but not too rich in nitrogen. Unfortunately, we cannot change the situation so choose plants that can handle the situation you put them in.
